The Class Proceedings Fund is a nonprofit fund intended to enhance access to justice in Ontario by providing financial support to class action plaintiffs in the form of disbursement funding and providing plaintiffs with adverse cost award protection. The Class Proceedings Committee (CPC) is a committee of 5 senior lawyers, who adjudicate applications for funding.
The Summer Law Student will work closely with Counsel and Associate Counsel to the CPC. Duties will include assisting with the review and analysis of funded cases, analysis of the database and records, legal research, and assisting with the writing of a major research paper. Opportunities may include observing the CPC hearings and select certification and other motions for funded cases.
Key responsibilities:
- Assist in analysis of data on funded cases
- Legal research
- Assisting in writing of major research paper
Qualifications:
- J.D. or L.L.B. student at a law school located in Ontario
- Computer literacy, including competency with Microsoft Access being an asset
- Interest in and/or courses in class actions is an asset but is not necessary
- Excellence in written and oral communication skills
- Excellent legal research skills
- Ability to work autonomously and take appropriate action where required
- Knowledge and understanding of risk management
- Strong service orientation
- A high degree of integrity, sound judgment, and problem-solving skills
Work arrangements:
- This is a hybrid work arrangement, with attendance at the Foundation’s office in downtown Toronto 2 days a week.
- The successful candidate must provide their own computer and internet access for any work-from-home work arrangement.
- The successful candidate must provide their own smart/cell phone for two-factor identification at work.
- This is a fulltime (35 hrs/week) position. Compensation is $22/hour. The summer term runs for approximately 14 weeks from May 13 to August 16, 2024.
