Ontario-based registered charities and nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply to PIAF if they have: an articling principal onsite; legal work that is suitable for an articling student; and no access to funds to hire an articling student.

Note: Legal Aid Ontario (LAO)-supported legal clinics are generally not eligible to apply for this program. However, as part of the Foundation's strategic focus on increasing access to justice in northern Ontario, LAO-supported clinics located in northern Ontario (as defined by LAO) are eligible to apply for this 3-year cycle of granting.

Call for applications are made in three-year cycles. The next call for applications is planned for the fall of 2023 for the 2025-26 articling period. (The Foundation bases its call for applications and grant amounts on available revenue, therefore both are subject to change.)

When the call for host organizations is open, details can be found through our Open call for applications webpage. Law students apply for the articling positions directly with the host organizations. These organizations distribute the job advertisements to all law schools, in particular to the career development offices. Students do not apply to the Foundation directly.

The Public Interest Articling Fellowship offers articling students unique work experiences in public interest law while increasing the capacity of nonprofit organizations to respond to significant legal needs. The Foundation makes a substantial contribution to public interest law in Ontario through this program as many organizations simply do not have enough funding to host articling students.
