Francisco Rico-Martínez Guthrie Award celebration

Family, friends, and colleagues gathered on December 6, 2023 to celebrate The Law Foundation of Ontario’s 2023 Guthrie Award recipient, Francisco Rico-Martínez. The Guthrie Award is the Foundation’s signature award to recognize exceptional access to justice champions.

Before his passing in 2021, Francisco was one of the country’s most persuasive and empathetic advocates for a more fair, just, and humane immigration system. He was the co-founder and co-director of the groundbreaking FCJ Refugee Centre, with his spouse Loly Rico, and was a prolific advocate, educator, writer, and speaker on the needs, rights, and experiences of people without status.
