Public Interest Articling Fellowship Host Organization Call for Applications

The Law Foundation of Ontario makes grants to advance access to justice. Grants are made to nonprofit organizations that work to benefit the people of Ontario.

To apply, a host organization must:

• Be Ontario-based and provide benefit to the people of Ontario
• Be a nonprofit or registered charity
• Have an onsite articling principal approved by the Law Society of Ontario
• Have legal work that is suitable for an articling student

Note: Legal Aid Ontario (LAO)-supported legal clinics are generally not eligible to apply for this program. However, as part of the Foundation's strategic focus on increasing access to justice in northern Ontario, LAO-supported clinics located in northern Ontario (as defined by LAO) are eligible to apply for this 3-year cycle of granting.

According to Legal Aid Ontario, northern clinics are those in Bracebridge, Elliot Lake, Fort Frances & Kenora, Kapuskasing, Little Current, Moosonee, North Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, and Timmins.

Applications are evaluated based on:

• The quality of the proposed articling Fellow’s experience
• The organization’s history and experience supporting students’ learning and development
• The expected impact that the student’s work will have on the organization and the community it serves

Up to $84,500/year (for Year 1, with the potential for adjustments in Years 2 and 3 to reflect changing costs).

Host organizations will receive funding from the Foundation to pay their articling students’ salaries ($62,000 for a 10-month articling term) and benefits, and to cover the Law Society of Ontario lawyer licensing process fees and other expenses associated with hosting a fellow.
