The Law Foundation of Ontario is more than doubling the number of grants for articling student positions for the nonprofit justice sector. Beginning in 2025, the Public Interest Articling Fellowship (PIAF) program will expand from 8 to 18 host organizations. This increases the PIAF granting from $1.9M to $4.75M over the 3-year cycle of these grants.

PIAF provides nonprofit organizations with funding to host an articling student for a 10-month period, through the articling program governed by the Law Society of Ontario. PIAF helps respond to the significant need for legal assistance within the community while giving law students valuable work experience in public interest law.

The increased granting has widened both the number and diversity of the placements. This is seen in the addition of new and emerging areas of law such as elder law, health law, and animal rights, as well as location, with 30% of placements outside the Greater Toronto Area.

Based on the Foundation’s strategic focus on increasing access to justice in northern Ontario and the related needs-assessment consultations we did in 2023, we opened the PIAF program for the first time to legal clinics in northern Ontario (as defined by Legal Aid Ontario).

We also made changes to ease pressures on grantees by building in a 2% year-over-year increase for the duration of the 3-year grant and streamlining the annual renewal processes.
