This summer job opportunity showed me what pursing law might look like, and the many options that law offers. It was an amazing experience, and I’m very grateful to have had the opportunity to work at The Law Foundation of Ontario. – Ayaan Hashi
My name is Ayaan Hashi and I’m 17 years old, going in to grade 12 in the upcoming school year. This summer I got the chance to work at The Law Foundation of Ontario for a month through the Law in Action Within Schools (LAWS) program. (LAWS is also a grantee of the Foundation.)
The LAWS program starts from grade 10, and enables high school students to learn more about law in everyday courses. We are visited by guest speakers from various backgrounds that talk about law. We also get to go on trips to courthouses, participate in mock trial tournaments, apply for amazing summer job placements, and much more.
This year, I applied for the summer job placement, which gives me the opportunity to work at a law firm, courthouse, ministry, foundation, and many more other places. It’s an opportunity to really experience what working in the law field is like.
My placement was at The Law Foundation of Ontario. Throughout the month, I took on different tasks at the Foundation, such as filing, organizing, and making lists. I also got the opportunity to go to the Law Society of Upper Canada for a tour, write an assessment of an application for a grant, and took part in a meeting that the Foundation held.
The Law Society of Upper Canada tour was incredible. I got to see historical paintings and hear about facts of the Law Society that intrigued me. I also enjoyed writing an assessment of an application for a grant; it gave me huge insight into what the Foundation does on a regular basis.
Overall, what I really enjoyed about working at the Foundation was learning about how it functions; it plays a huge role in providing access to justice and I’m grateful that I got a chance to see how it happens.
